The Second-hand Bookshop
The Second-hand Bookshop was first established at Balwyn High School in 1988, as a way to raise funds enough to be able to request a Chaplain be provided to Balwyn High School. A chaplain began in 1991 and the name was changed to include the word Chaplaincy to promote and give focus to its aim in this new venture. The Bookshop remains separate from the Chaplaincy Committee (now Support Group), but is overseen by an Assistant Principal and through that to School Council.
Chaplaincy at Balwyn High School
The Chaplain at Balwyn High School is full-time, and works as part of the
Welfare Team which is housed in the Well-Being Centre, located at the western Moody St entry to the school.
Funding Chaplaincy at Balwyn High School
At this time the costs associated with providing chaplaincy services at Balwyn High School is shared equally by the school and the Balwyn Chaplaincy Support Group as a sub-branch of KORUS Connect, provider of Chaplains.
The Balwyn Chaplaincy Support Group
The Support Group is responsible for raising the majority of funds to cover the costs for providing a chaplaincy service to staff and students at Balwyn High School. To do this they contact churches in the area for a mission contribution and seek other ways of raising funds and awareness. As a registered not-for-profit they are able to provide tax-deductible receipts for personal donations. The income through selling second-hand books and uniforms provides the Committee with the bulk of the funds needed. The Support Group also aims to supplement any short-fall in other areas, so as to honour its agreement with KORUS Connect, provider of Chaplains.
The Support Group holds gatherings regularly to meet with and hear from the Chaplain, and to increase Vision and Values
awareness in the school in every way possible.
